I believe in simplicity. I believe in feelings and family, friendship and fidelity, forgiveness and fortitude. I believe in miracles, meditation, motherhood and make believe and that music is the only real magic this world has ever seen. I believe in concocting and consuming colorful cocktails and fussing over and feasting on fabulous food. I believe in living out loud. I believe in laughing until your face hurts and loving until your heart breaks. I believe in behaving boldly and when warranted, badly, taking bubble baths and being barefoot. I believe in poetry, puppies and playing in the park. I believe in seeking without ceasing that which sings to my soul and strengthens my spirit. I believe in dancing in the rain and digging in the dirt. I believe in honest expression and the golden rule. I believe in Nature and naps and that naïveté is sometimes necessary. I believe in goodness and gratitude, grit and grace. I believe in unity and the power of the universe. I believe in being authentically awesome. I believe in being better today than yesterday but not as good as tomorrow. I believe in challenges and change and growing pains. I believe in the inherent worth of every creature, being and life force on this planet. I believe in honoring the individual journeys and paths of people whether I understand them or not. I believe in letting people live their truth and trusting that it’s right for them. I believe in lifting up and letting go. I believe that death is just as sacred an experience as birth and that it is never, ever an end.

Mostly, I just believe that I’m never going to stop learning what it is I believe.

Tin Sparrow - “For You”

And I’m starting to think that there’s not enough ink on the page
And I hope, I hope that you, you know the truth
That my time, my effort, my soul…is all for you
For you
It’s all for you
It’s all for you

If we go out into the woods and we look at all the trees, we don’t say, “I wish that oak tree were an elm.” Somehow, we can allow trees to be what they are; we can grant that each tree is perfect just the way it is. But when it comes to people, if everybody isn’t the way we think they ought to be, all hell breaks loose!

Everybody is always doing the best they can, it’s all perfect. There are all these strands of the universe, weaving back and forth, interacting with one another. In each individual manifestation, those strands have woven themselves together in a unique way so as to produce yet another perfect statement of the unstable.

So, someone comes to you, she’s hung up, uptight, and angry. You see the perfection in that. You say, “Far out! There’s God as an angry person. You weird manifestation of God, you.” Give each incarnation the space to manifest exactly as it needs to manifest.

—Ram Dass, Paths to God

“Our job is to love others without stopping to inquire whether or not they are worthy. That is not our business and, in fact, it is nobody’s business. What we are asked to do is to love, and this love itself will render both ourselves and our neighbors worthy.”

—Thomas Merton

“If you dedicate your existence to being likable, however, and if you adopt whatever cool persona is necessary to make it happen, it suggests that you’ve despaired of being loved for who you really are. And if you succeed in manipulating other people into liking you, it will be hard not to feel, at some level, contempt for those people, because they’ve fallen for your shtick.”

—Jonathan Franzen

“No matter what they wish for, no matter how far they go, people can never be anything but themselves.”

—Haruki Murakami

“When you catch people complaining this week, simply say to them, “Stop.” Learn to use your voice to halt people’s energy when they are giving you their complaints. If you listen to people gripe, if you listen to their negativity, you are putting yourself in a position of being affected by their lower energy. You do not need to listen. Refocus people on the positive and you will be doing the same for your own energy.”

“For a long time it had seemed to me that life was about to begin - real life. But there was always some obstacle in the way, something to be gotten through first, some unfinished business, time still to be served, a debt to be paid. Then life would begin. At last it dawned on me that these obstacles were my life.”

— Alfred D. Souza
